This weekend sees the BUCS Futsal Championship resume and eight of the Boro squad, plus manager Damon Shaw could be in action in York aiming to put on foot in the national finals. Teesside have won one and lost one match so far, but have five matches remaining in the group stage, with four this Sunday Teesside could go a long way to reaching the finals in Sheffield in March.
The group stage consists of two groups, followed by the playoffs, which consists of two rounds of matches. The group winners go directly into the final playoff game, with all others playing for a place in that final playoff match so winning the group would give Teesside an excellent chance. The final group match and playoffs clash with Boro's league match against Liverpool, so this weekend's matches are all the more important to avoid a tough playoff game as the squad will have to be split between the two venues so will unlikely be at full strength in either. Jason Kilbride, chairman of Teesside University Futsal Club, as well as captain of Teesside and Boro is not underestimating the task ahead and sees the BUCS Futsal Championship as a very important competition. "This competition is important to us, especially as we have such a good record in the past. We want to be in the finals as we believe we will be contenders for the title. Last season the squad was threadbare but we still did well so we're confident that we have enough to go all the way this season." This year is also a World University Championship year and the futsal event takes place in August in Serbia. The Teesside players have ambitions of playing for Great Britain and manager Damon Shaw thinks there are a few who should certainly be considered. "We've got a talented team and I think any of the Boro players could play for Great Britain. We need to be in the finals though so they are on the radar of the Great Britain manager."
